Project example: Bürgerwind Fuchstal Gemeindewald wind farm

This renewable energy project in Germany supplies more than 4,700 households with green electricity and avoids 16,000 tonnes of CO₂e annually. This corresponds to approximately the weight of 1.5 Eiffel Towers.

In addition, the wind farm is linked to a research project on camera-based bird monitoring. It is being carried out in collaboration with Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences and funded by the Free State of Bavaria.

This project was made possible through citizen participation and financing by UmweltBank, demonstrating how sustainable banking can directly enable climate protection and technological innovation.

UmweltBank contributes to climate protection through a clear sustainability and climate strategy that guides all our financing decisions. We focus on renewable energy projects such as solar and wind power, as well as energy-efficient and ecological housing. In addition, we apply strict positive and exclusion criteria: we actively finance projects with measurable environmental benefits while consistently excluding investments in harmful industries such as fossil fuels and nuclear energy.

UmweltBank assesses all investments and projects against strict ESG criteria. ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) criteria provide a framework for evaluating the sustainability and ethical responsibility of investments and projects. For example, UmweltBank does not finance fossil fuel projects, whilst initiatives such as the expansion of renewable energy and sustainable housing are specifically supported.

EMAS is a voluntary environmental management system established by the European Union that helps companies and organisations to continuously improve their environmental performance.

UmweltBank has been EMAS-certified since 2017 and has successfully met the standards every year since then to retain this certification. It provides UmweltBank with a reliable framework for measuring progress and communicating it transparently.
